Gas vs. Electric Dryers

When the time comes to buy a new dryer, you have some decisions to make as far as features and design options but, choosing your power source is among the most important.
In the appliance world, there are two popular power options: gas and electric. Both gas and electric dryers operate in the same way – drawing in air, warming it up with heating coils, and using the conditioned air to dry the clothes inside – but the similarities end there.
Let’s take a look at the main differences between gas and electric dryers. That way, you can decide for yourself which type of dryer might suit your needs.

Gas and Electric Dryers: How Are They Different?

The most obvious difference between gas and electric dryers is their power source. Both use electricity to run the fan, drum, lights, and controls, but a propane or natural gas dryer requires gas to generate heat.
2

What Does Your Laundry Room Need to Accommodate a Gas or Electric Dryer?

Aside from ample space, an electric dryer requires a 240-volt electrical outlet for a power source, while a gas dryer needs a nearby gas line and a 110- or 115-volt electrical outlet. Both options typically require a vent system. If your laundry room doesn’t have the hookups for the dryer you want, then you’ll have to spend more on installation costs.

Choosing the Right Dryer for Your Needs

Why Get a Gas Dryer:

Gas dryers are usually the most cost-effective choice in the long run because of their typically higher energy efficiency and the cost of natural gas which can provide overall lower operating costs. Even if you have to install a new gas line for your home, you may still recoup the costs through utility bill savings if you don’t plan on moving any time soon.

Why Get an Electric Dryer:

Electric dryers, on the other hand, are generally more affordable than comparable gas models, and you can easily install them on your own. These dryers are also a good option if you don’t have an existing gas hookup, you rent, or you plan to move within the next five years.
