Standard Washer Dryer Sizes and How to Measure

While you’re probably more interested in looking at features such as size capacity, temperature control, and auto-dispense, the first thing you should do when looking to buy a new washer and dryer is to consider the available space you have to put them in. Measuring out your space in advance will ensure you find the perfect fit for your needs.
Here’s how to correctly determine what size washer and dryer you need:
Step 1: Choose your style, set-up, and size
Step 2: Add space for easy use

Step 1: All About Style, Set-up, and Size

Washing machine and dryer dimensions vary, and no product is better than another in that regard. However, selecting the right style, set-up, and size for you can make all the difference as far as ease of installation and use.

Standard Side-By-Side Washer and Dryer

Usually, if you’re going the traditional side-by-side set-up route, you’ll need a space around 40″ (101.6 cm) high and 56″ (142.24 cm) wide (for the washer and dryer together), with a depth of 31 to 34″ (78.74 to 86.36 cm). These are typical standard washer and dryer dimensions.

A side-by-side washer and dryer could be the right fit for your home

Side-by-side models from Whirlpool brand come in Top Load or Front Load configurations – as well as in a range of sizes. Start your search with this matching set of side-by-side washers and dryers.

Stacked Washer and Dryer

Traditional, normal-sized stackable washer and dryer dimensions typically require an area that is approximately 80″ (203.1 cm) in height with a width of 28″ (71.12 cm) and a depth of 34″ (86.36 cm).

Washer and Dryer for Small Spaces

Small-Space Pairs: Either Side-by-Side or Stackable

Designed mainly for closets, apartments, condos, and modestly sized homes, a small-space side-by-side washer and dryer set-up generally fits nicely in a space with dimensions of about 34″ (86.36 cm) high, 48″ wide (121.92 cm), and 24-25″ deep.
If you prefer a stacked style set, you’ll need dimensions around 68″ tall by 24″ wide and 24-25″ (60.96 to 63.5 cm) deep.

Stacked Laundry Centres: All-in-One Freestanding Units

Commonly, taking up just a bit more space than a small-space stacked pair, you also have the option to purchase a single-piece stacked laundry centre, which also fits well into many closets in small houses or apartments. Typically, you will need a space with the following dimensions at a minimum: a height of 74 to 76″ (187.96 to 193.04 cm), a width of 24 to 28″ (60.96 to 71.12 cm), and a depth of 27 to 33″ (68.58 to 83.82 cm).

Step 2: Allow Space for Easy Use and Wiggle Room

You want your washer and dryer to fit nicely in your allotted space, and that requires a bit of wiggle room. In the front, you’re going to want at least four feet for loading and unloading your clothes, and you need space to fully open the doors.
You will need plumbing and in most cases an exhaust vent. Add about 6″ (15.24 cm) to your measurements for hoses and venting in the back. Always refer to and follow your appliance and product use and care instructions and installation guide before beginning any task, as your primary source of information.

Step 3: Map Out a Path

Once you’ve measured the space where you plan to place your washer and dryer, next you need to measure everything else leading up to that  space—the path your washer and dryer will need to travel through:

  • The front door
  • The hallway leading up to your laundry space
  • Any room you may encounter along the way
You probably don’t want the adventure of getting everything prepared and then finding out at the last minute that your new machine won’t fit through the front door.
