Cooktops: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Kitchen

What Size Cooktop Do I Need?

1

Dimensions of your kitchen countertop will differ based on the way you prepare food and the size of your kitchen. Typically, cooktop sizes range from 15 inches (38 cm) to 36 inches (91 cm) wide to accommodate small-space apartments and large kitchens alike.

Do you need more room to create? The width of a commercial cooktop can vary from 30 inches (76 cm) to 48 inches (122 cm), and sometimes even larger.

How Big Is a Standard Cooktop?

2

A standard cooktop is a 30-inch, four-burner model that can be used for a wide range of cooking tasks. With this proven style, you get the best of both worlds, with plenty of creative freedom and flexibility for placement in your kitchen.

How Do I Determine My Current Cooktop Dimensions?

3

The dimensions of your cooktop can be determined in a few simple steps with only a tape measure. Both the cooktop surface itself and the appliance cutout should be measured for the most accurate results.

Keep in mind that the size of your cooktop may differ from the size of your appliance cutout. The cutout dimension is usually smaller than the cooktop dimension since it allows the appliance surface to extend beyond the cutout space and align with your countertop.

Always check and follow your appliance and product installation instructions before beginning, as it should be your primary source of information.

Step 1. Measure Cooktop Width

A tape measure should be run between the outer edges of the cooktop from the left to the right.

Step 2. Measure Cooktop Depth

Measure the distance from the front to the back of the cooktop, including the control panel, using the same technique as in step 1.

Step 3. Measure The Appliance Cutout Width

As with measuring the width of the cooktop, run the measuring tape from the left edge to the right edge of the cutout space.

Note: To increase accuracy, measure at both the front and the back of the cutout.

Step 4: Measure the Appliance Cutout Depth

Simply measure the cutout from front to back, as you would the depth of the cooktop.

  • Measure on both the left and the right sides of the cutout for increased accuracy.

Measurement Tip: The smallest dimension for each of your cutout’s width and depth should always be used if any discrepancies exist. By doing this, you ensure an exact
fit for the cooktop.

What is the Difference in Size Between an Electric and Gas Cooktop?

4

Both electric and gas cooktops are generally available in the same sizes but use different power sources. Like a standard electric, a standard gas cooktop has four burners to provide lots of flexibility.

Things to Consider When Shopping For A Kitchen Cooktop

5

You should consider the number of burners, features, and overall size of the unit when selecting a kitchen cooktop, whether for a countertop or a kitchen island.

A cooktop with five or six burners may be the best choice if flexibility is your top priority. Cooktops offer a wide variety of innovative features designed to free up your creativity and improve culinary experiences.
